The Burnet High School volleyball team defeated Caldwell 25-20, 25-11, 25-19 Nov. 2 in the area round of the Class 4A playoffs, one day earlier than most teams play in the second round.

It’s the third consecutive victory in the area round.

“’Im so proud of our entire team and staff,” head coach Crystal Shipley said. “We are blessed with an amazing staff and with girls that are hard workers. They have big goals and they are working many hours a week and sacrificing so much to our team.”

The Lady Dawgs (27-12, 8-2 District 24-4A runners-up) will play China Spring at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Lake Belton High in the regional quarterfinals. That contest will be played Nov. 3.

Caldwell (21-19, 6-6 District 22-4A fourth place) didn’t go without a fight. But Burnet showed it has more determination, depth and resiliency in ending the match in three sets.

“The Lady Dawgs were victorious because they trust our defense and scrappiness,” Shipley said. “There was a lot of fight in each of our girls. They adapted to changes and adjustments made and pushed points when we needed them most.”

Shipley pointed out her players’ mental toughness and short memories — to forget their mishaps — was a key ingredient for success.

“They are determined to battle back from errors,” she said. “They don’t want to drop a set because that hurts momentum. The team is working on communicating more and staying in a rhythm. We know that each game will get tougher and we have to continue to be more consistent.”
